What happens, step by step

Why waterproofing quotes vary so wildly

You will get quotes from ₹25 to ₹150 per sq ft for what sounds like the same terrace. They are not the same job. The variables are:

System. A cementitious coating is cheap and lasts a few seasons. A 3 mm APP torch-applied membrane is a different product with a different lifespan. A seamless PU liquid membrane costs roughly 40% more per square metre than APP sheet and is the right answer on complex shapes.
Preparation. If the slab is sound and slopes correctly, preparation is a day. If it is cracked, holds water in the middle, and the parapet joint has failed, preparation is most of the job — and it is the part that decides whether the waterproofing lasts.
Whether they fix the drainage. Waterproofing a terrace whose drain outlet is blocked is pointless. The membrane will be under standing water every monsoon.
Whether they come back. A quote with no warranty and no follow-up inspection is priced for one visit.

Damp walls: find the source, not the stain

The damp patch on your bedroom wall is usually the last place the water arrived, not the first. Common sources in Jalandhar homes, roughly in order of frequency:

A failed terrace joint or parapet. Water gets under the membrane edge at the wall and travels sideways through the slab before showing inside, often several feet from where you see it.
A leaking drainpipe or plumbing shaft. Especially common in bathrooms that share a wall with a bedroom.
Rising damp from the plinth. Shows as a horizontal band along the bottom of a ground-floor wall. Treating the wall face will not stop it — the damp is coming up through the masonry.
Condensation. Not a leak at all, and the most common misdiagnosis. It appears on the coldest surface, usually an exterior-facing wall, and is worst in winter and monsoon. Waterproofing the outside will not fix it — ventilation and insulation will.

When to waterproof in Punjab

The window is February to May, before the monsoon. Membrane needs a dry slab, dry weather and correct curing, and none of those are reliable between July and September. A job done properly in April is tested by the monsoon it was built for.

Pre-monsoon bookings fill up first, and rightly so. If you are reading this in June, get the inspection done anyway — finding the leak now means the repair is planned and priced rather than an emergency in August.
